Internationally recognized jury recognizes firm for excellence in information graphic design

PORTLAND, Ore. (March 18, 2008) — XPLANE, a global consulting and information design firm that drives business results through visual communication, today announced its bronze medal win at 16th Malofiej International Infographics Awards. Known as the most important and respected infographic contest in the world, Malofiej 16 announced this year’s winners on Friday, March 14 at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. This marked XPLANE’s first time entering an infographic into the competition.

XPLANE’s winning infographic was created for National City and explains the company’s home loan process, along with details on what to expect and what details to avoid. The piece was designed by Ted May and Taylor Marks and Matt Homann acted as the project’s consultant. May, Marks and Homann are all based in XPLANE’s St. Louis office.

A total of 156 medals were awarded out of 1,300 entries at Malofiej 16: 10 gold, 50 silver and 96 bronze. The jury, chaired by Michael Robinson, graphics editor of The Guardian, was composed by Sean McNaughton, National Geographic; Larry Nista, The Washington Post, Renata Steffen, Folha de São Paulo; Jaime Figueiredo, Expresso; Julián de Velasco, Focus magazine; Shan Carter, nytimes.com; Xaquín González, Newsweek; Lech Mazurczyk, Newsweek Polska; and Ramón Salaverría, University of Navarra. In 2007, XPLANE founder and chairman, Dave Gray, was part of the selecting jury.

The annual Malofiej competition is sponsored by the Society of News Design and named for Argentinean infographer Alejandro Malofiej, who died in 1987. The Malofiej competition has more than a dozen categories, accepts both print and online pieces and attracts entries from around the world. Each competition covers one calendar year. Judging takes place in the spring at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. Winners receive bronze, silver and gold medals, and winning entries are published in an annual book, “Malofiej.”
