Stephen Downes’ space is rapidly becoming one of my favorite sites, I don’t know how I’ve neglected exploring it for so long. Lots of stuff here: “When I try to explain why I have a website at all (and yes, it needs explaining sometimes, when people observe that I am developing it at least partially on company time), I explain it thus: *as a ‘virtual lab’ — I experiment with new technologies, new designs, etc. on my page; *As an ‘alternative publisher’ — though more traditional publishers have been kind enough to take my articles I prefer the ‘instant publication’ effect; *As a research tool — especially my link portal — where I keep all the bits of information I need at my fingertips; *As a sampling instrument — the feedback I get from my site has been the primary source of new ideas and areas of improvement for me; *As a marketing tool — my website is almost always cited on funding applications as it serves as the best evidence of any expertise or insights I may have to offer.”
